The Prime Minister has gifted Gujarat by making Sardar Sarovar Dam on the occasion of his 67th birthday.  This dam has been built on the Narmada River in Navgram, Gujarat.  It took 56 years to build this dam.  Many people protested between the construction of the dam.  This dam, prepared after so many ups and downs, will now prove to be a milestone in the development of Gujarat.  The dream of this new wonder of New India was seen by the iron-man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel of the country in 1946.  The foundation of this dam was laid by the country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and now PM Modi dedicated Sardar Sarvovar Dam to this country.  86.20 lakh cubic meter of concrete has been used to build this Bahubali Dam, that is, from the earth to the moon, we can use this much concrete to make roads.  Today we will talk about the background and features of this dam.

 BACKGROUND

There were frequent ups and downs in the construction of Sardar Sarovar Dam.  Sometimes the controversy over the height of the dam increased and sometimes the voice of injustice was raised with the displaced due to the dam.  The initiative to build Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River was taken by Sardar Patel, the first Home Minister of the country.  After Patel's initiative, an engineer from Mumbai, J.M.  Vachha prepared a plan for this dam.  But it took 15 years in its inception.  On 15 April 1961, the then PM Nehru laid the foundation stone of the dam.

Why is Sardar Sarovar Dam in the news nowadays?

Many farmers of Madhya Pradesh living in the backwaters of Sardar Sarovar Dam located in Gujarat have been displaced and there is a possibility of displacement even further.  The Madhya Pradesh government has promised to help them, but the farmers are still not convinced.

The height of this dam was increased to 138.68 meters in 2017.  By September 9 this year, its water level has reached 136.04 meters.  Due to heavy rains, the entire reservoir of this dam can be filled by October 15.

 Danger of rising water level

In Barwani and Dhar districts of Madhya Pradesh, the level of water in the submergence area of the dam is constantly increasing.

The Narmada Bachao Andolan group says that when the reservoir of Sardar Sarovar Dam is completely filled, 40,000 families living in 192 villages of Madhya Pradesh will be rendered homeless.

At the root of this problem are some errors of the project made for Sardar Sarovar Dam.  According to the World Bank, displacement and rehabilitation and its impact on the environment were evaluated at a non-existent basis before starting the project.

 Displacement related challenges

 Compensation money

Construction of islands wherever there is increased water.

Inadequate number of plots and rehabilitation sites.

 Leveling of land for building

Some people resort to a fake registry of land for the house.

The right of the fishing community on the reservoir.

Cases of rehabilitated displaced in Gujarat.

Problems of farmers whose land has gone to rehabilitation sites

IMPORTANT FEATURES OF Sardar Sarovar Dam

86.20 lakh cubic meter of concrete has been used to make this Bahubali Dam.

The height of the dam is 138.68 meters.

The length of the dam is 1,210 meters.

Sardar Sarovar Dam has the capacity to store 4.73 million cubic water.

This dam will generate 6 thousand MW power.

Initially the cost of this project was about 6400 crores which has now increased to Rs 50,000 crores.

The dam has 30 gates.  The weight of each door is 450 tons and it takes 1 hour to close each door.

So far 16,000 crores have been earned through Sardar Sarovar Dam, which is almost double of the expenditure on its structure.

Sardar Sarovar Dam is the second largest dam in the world for the use of concrete.

The Grand Coulee Dam of America is the largest dam in the world.

This dam is the third highest dam in India after Bhakra and Lakhwar.

Sardar Sarovar Dam is the third largest in the world in terms of water release capacity.

Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra will benefit from this dam.

Madhya Pradesh will get maximum 57% of the power coming from the dam.

Maharashtra will get 27%, Gujarat will get 16% power from Sardar Sarovar Dam.
